“The church is built in a community and is there to serve the people, therefore should remain with the people and offer the service to the people” these were the words of Rev White Rakuba, Programme Co-ordinator of LUCSA-NORDIC Diakonia (LUNODIA), a joint programme between the Lutheran Communion in Southern Africa (LUCSA) and the Nordic Churches. He was addressing the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa (ELCSA)’s Western Diocese Pastors, at their 3-day Convention held from 02 to 04 March in Jericho, near Brits.
Rev Rakuba challenged the church to speak against poverty and the injustices that the people are subjected to. 'Let us play our role in speaking and acting against the injustice that is being experienced by our people. It is our responsibility as the church to respond to the needs of the poor and the oppressed. We have a Christian commitment of ensuring that we serve our people with compassion” he said
He ended by encouraging the pastors to ensure that there are diaconal structures in their congregations and parishes.
