The LUCSA Bishops and Church Leaders Conference began on February 24, 2025, under the theme “Envisioning a Cooperative Future.” This biennial gathering serves as a vital platform for theological reflection, leadership development, and strategic planning within the Lutheran Communion in Southern Africa.
This year’s conference was particularly significant as it welcomed newly elected bishops, including Bishop Rochelle Petrus and Bishop Jerome Slamat from the Moravian Church, as well as the newly elected President of the Moravian Church in South Africa. From the ELCIN in Namibia, we welcomed Bishop Hilja Hamukwaya and Bishop Gideon Niitenge, along with newly elected Bishop Frank Schutte from ELCIN-GELC in Namibia. To facilitate a smooth transition into their leadership roles, LUCSA incorporated an induction session designed to equip new bishops with the knowledge and support they need to navigate their positions effectively. Facilitators for this session included Emeritus Bishop Prof. Moila and the former Bishop of the Northern Diocese, who provided valuable insights into the theological, social, and organizational aspects of church leadership.
The conference highlighted the role of bishops not only as spiritual leaders but also as vital advocates for social justice, climate action, and ethical governance within the church. Discussions emphasized the need to align the church’s mission with contemporary societal challenges, ensuring that faith-based leadership remains responsive and relevant.
As the conference continues, leaders will explore further ways to foster collaboration and enhance the Lutheran Communion’s influence in promoting ethical leadership.
